Moderate/Vigorous Physical Activity and Sedentary Time in Children using Accelerometery Data.
Wednesday 10th December 2014
1-2pm
Sunley Conference Centre the University of Northampton, Park Campus
Low levels of physical activity and an increase in sedentary pursuits (e.g., television (TV) viewing, computer use) among youth has been implicated in the aetiology of childhood obesity. As a result, physical activity promotion, and more recently, reducing engagement in sedentary behaviour, have been a focal point of global attempts to counteract this critical public health problem.
In order for children and adolescents to achieve health enhancing levels of PA and reduce their engagement in sedentary pursuits, we need to ensure the provision of optimal opportunities for physical activity participation. Youth sport has been advocated as a vehicle through which more physically active lifestyles can be realised and encouraged among children and adolescents, and may also reduce options for sedentary time. However, self-report assessments of PA have limited the extent to which we can establish the true value of youth sport as a setting for promoting health enhancing levels of PA among children and adolescents.
In this seminar, Dr. Sally Fenton will present a series of studies conducted as part of the European-wide Promoting Adolescent Physical Activity (PAPA) project. These studies have employed objective assessments of physical activity to examine a) levels of physical activity engagement among children active in the context of organised sport and b) psychosocial factors influencing levels of physical activity engagement and sedentary time in this cohort.
A sandwich lunch will be provided
